The rules and regulations for producer liability for tyres (Swedish Code of Statutes – SFS 1994:1236) were introduced in 1994 to create an environmentally sustainable society.

Producer responsibility is a policy instrument, the aim of which is to integrate the environmental costs arising during a product’s lifecycle into the price of the products.

Producer responsibility is based on the principle of the ‘polluter pays’, whereby those causing a negative environmental impact are also responsible for the socio-economic costs that arise.

Eight producing industries are covered by producer responsibility in Sweden. Producer responsibility for tyres is one of these.
